In general, when you work in a chemistry lab you need to wear safety goggles (and a labcoat, and most of the time gloves). It’s a regulatory health and safety requirement and is for your own protection. Many chemicals can damage your skin or are irritant and you don’t want to be exposed to them even when you handle them. There is always a risk of accidents, spillage, some reaction not going to plan etc. and you need to protect your eyes from damage by wearing safety goggles (surely, you don’t want to get blind!).
