Back before I even went to sixth form I did work experience in a primary school- this wasn’t relevant to my career though, it’s just something I had to do as a teenager! The most relevant work experience I’ve done has been a summer research project in my second year of university. I would definitely encourage you to find relevant work experience if you really want to work in a particular field- I’d have loved the opportunity to go to an astronomy school before I went to uni, for example (if you’re interested, look here: http://spaceschool.co.uk/). When I was at uni, I helped out with two weeks of work experience for 15-16 year olds that my department put on every year (the SUPER summer school at the University of Sheffield), so I didn’t do the work experience myself, but it was really valuable being able to help the kids that did.
I did work experience in a dental practice and a hospital as I always wanted to work in a medical area. And later during my undergrad, lots of placements in the term holidays to explore different fields of research.
