The problem with my research (or also that of many others) is that it is sometimes too abstract for other people, the public, or even scientist to understand what’s going on. I’m a visual person and like pictures, diagrams etc to understand things better. But as I work with nano-sized molecules, normal pictures like with a microscope are difficult to obtain and I use a lot of indirect methods of which we draw conclusions of what’s going on. The idea is to use those conclusion and concepts, simplify them or use analogies to explain and show to other people my research and findings. If I can for example print or make models in 3 D people can see and touch, they can relate better to it. Having multiple 3D objects than also enable me to show the relations of those objects to each other.
